The red panda is Mozilla's mascot as they used to have a Firefox Live page where you could watch a few red pandas on camera.
Is the Firefox a red panda?
You would have been closer to the truth had you said it was a racoon or a colourful tiny panda. The English word for the red panda is, yes you guessed it, 'Firefox. This is where the browser gets its name from. This means that the Logo is actually a red panda, not a fox.
Is the Firefox a fox?
That bottom middle image with the fox curled around the purple globe is our current Firefox browser logo. The bottom right image of the fiery marble is our parent brand logo, which represents the family of Firefox products we make outside of just the Firefox browser, like Firefox Monitor.
