A titer is a laboratory test that measures the presence and amount of antibodies in blood. A titer may be used to prove immunity to disease. A blood sample is taken and tested. If the test is positive (above a particular known value) the individual has immunity.
How are titers measured?
Antibody titers are performed by serially diluting the patient's plasma and testing with the appropriate RBCs to determine the highest titer where reaction occurs (some laboratories use weak+ and others 1+). The titration end point is reported as a reciprocal of the titer (e.g., 1:16 is reported as 16).
