Detection of infected animals
Since the scrapie agent elicits no detectable immune response in the host, vaccinations and serological testing for presence of antibodies have not been possible to date. At this time, there is no treatment to cure an animal that has contracted the disease.
How is scrapie transmitted?
Classical scrapie is spread from an infected dam to her offspring and other sheep or goats. Birth fluids and afterbirth from infected animals will contaminate pastures or buildings. Contact between sheep and goats and afterbirths should be kept to a minimum.
