Detection of infected animals

Since the scrapie agent elicits no detectable immune response in the host, vaccinations and serological testing for presence of antibodies have not been possible to date. At this time, there is no treatment to cure an animal that has contracted the disease.

How is scrapie transmitted?

Classical scrapie is spread from an infected dam to her offspring and other sheep or goats. Birth fluids and afterbirth from infected animals will contaminate pastures or buildings. Contact between sheep and goats and afterbirths should be kept to a minimum.

What are the symptoms of scrapie?

Signs of scrapie vary widely among individual animals and develop very slowly. As the result of nerve cell damage, affected animals usually show behavioral changes, tremor (especially of the head and neck), pruritus, and locomotor incoordination, which progresses to recumbency and death.

Scrapie gene testing enables flock masters to select breeding sheep which are resistant to Scrapie. Animals can be tested at any age using a blood or semen sample. Testing is usually limited to stud rams, ram lambs retained for breeding and ewes being selected for embryo transfer.
