What does Perinephric stranding on CT scan mean?

Perinephric stranding refers to the appearance of edema within the fat of the perirenal space on CT or MRI.

Is Perinephric stranding painful?

Perinephric stranding was classified as moderate or severe in only 5% of patients whose duration of pain was 2 hr or less and reached a maximum of 51% at 7-8 hr. Renal edema results in unilateral enlargement of the obstructed kidney. On CT studies, renal enlargement is usually assessed subjectively.

What is Periureteric fat stranding?

Perinephric and periureteric fat stranding were defined as linear areas of soft tissue attenuation in the perinephric and periureteric space, respectively [6]. Positive tissue rim sign was defined as annular soft tissue attenuation (20–40 HU) caused by an edematous ureteral wall surrounding the stone [6].

What is the Perinephric fat?

Fibroadipose tissue invested between Gerota's fascia and renal capsule (image B). These layers are important histo-anatomic landmarks for staging the extent of extrarenal extension by renal carcinoma (pT3 and pT4). Involvement of Gerota's fascia by renal carcinoma indicates high stage disease (pT4).

What is Perinephric?

(pĕr″ĭ-nĕf′rĭk) [Gr. peri, around, + nephros, kidney] Located or occurring around the kidney.

What causes fat stranding around the kidney?

Stranding of the perinephric fat is a common finding, particularly among older patients. The stranding likely represents fluid that collects within the bridging septa of the perinephric fat as a result of increased lymphatic pressure.

Is hydronephrosis a kidney disease?

Hydronephrosis (kidney swelling) occurs as the result of a disease. It is not a disease itself. Conditions that may lead to hydronephrosis include: Blockage of a ureter due to scarring caused by prior infections, surgeries, or radiation treatments.

What is bilateral Hydroureter?

Bilateral hydroureteronephrosis involves the dilatation of the renal pelvis, calyces and ureter; it develops secondary to urinary tract obstruction and leads to a build-up of back pressure in the urinary tract, and it may lead to impairment of renal function and ultimately culminate in renal failure.

What causes fat stranding?

Acute conditions that cause fat stranding include peritonitis; inflammation, infection, or ischemia of the bowel; perforation of colon cancer; inflammation associated with pancreatitis or cholecystitis; trauma; and surgery.

How is pyelonephritis treated?

Treatment options for women with acute pyelonephritis not requiring hospitalization include 500 mg of oral ciprofloxacin (Cipro) twice per day for seven days; 1,000 mg of extended-release ciprofloxacin once per day for seven days; or 750 mg of levofloxacin (Levaquin) once per day for five days.

What does kidney inflammation mean?

Inflammation of the kidney is called nephritis. In Greek terms, nephro means "of the kidney" and itis means "inflammation." The causes for nephritis include infections, autoimmune disorders and toxins in the body.

What is the purpose of perirenal fat?

Based on these anatomical features, perirenal fat regulates the cardiovascular system presumably via neural reflex, adipokine secretion, and fat-kidney interaction. These new insights suggest that perirenal fat may constitute a promising target for CVD management.
