Where is a pessary placed?

The pessary is a device that is placed into the vagina to support the uterus or bladder and rectum. It is a firm ring that presses against the wall of the vagina and urethra to help decrease urine leakage.

What is a pessary and how does it work?

A vaginal pessary is a removable device placed into the vagina. It is designed to support areas of pelvic organ prolapse. A variety of pessaries are available, including the ring, inflatable, doughnut, and Gellhorn. Your doctor will fit your pessary to hold the pelvic organs in position without causing discomfort.

How often should a pessary be removed and cleaned?

Women who can insert and remove the pessary on their own can remove it for cleaning weekly or even nightly. Follow-up visits should take place every six to 12 months. During the visit the pessary will be removed and cleaned.

How long does a pessary last?

Silicone pessaries can last for up to five years. A pessary does have a number of potential drawbacks and risks, although many women who use pessaries do not have any problems.

Is a pessary better than surgery?

Although POP surgery has several advantages over pessary treatment, the risk of complications is higher and it might be less cost-effective. Since previous studies have shown promising results with pessary treatment, it might be an equivalent option in the treatment of POP, probably with less risk and lower cost.

Can you go to the toilet with a pessary?

Dispose of the applicator in a safe place, out of the reach of children. The applicator cannot be flushed down the toilet. Since the pessary dissolves in the vagina, it may be helpful to wear a panty liner because it is quite common to notice a white chalky residue after using the pessary.

Is it painful to have a pessary inserted?

You may feel some discomfort when it is inserted, but it should not be painful. After the first fitting you will be asked to walk around for 15 to 20 minutes. This is to make sure the pessary does not fall out and that you can pass urine with the pessary in place.

In some cases, it's possible to ease symptoms or reverse a mild uterine prolapse by doing pelvic muscle exercises, along with other self-care measures. Prolapsed uterus doesn't always require other treatment. But in severe cases, use of a vaginal pessary can provide the necessary support.

Can you use KY jelly with a pessary?

Do not cover the whole pessary with lubricant because it will be difficult to hold. You can purchase the lubricant at most pharmacies. Some examples are K-Y Jelly® or Astroglide®. Do not use Vaseline or any other non-water soluble product.
