Degus should have constant access to good quality hay. Hay is much more important than commercial degu nuggets and should constitute the majority of the degus diet. A small measured portion of degu nuggets and some leafy vegetables should also be part of their daily diet.

How often should I feed my degus?
Degu are prey animals and like to know when they're going to eat. Hay should always be readily available; however you should provide the remainder of his dried food at a regular time. You can either choose to give him his dried food once a day (around a 10g portion) or twice a day (2 x 5g portions).
Can degus eat salad?
Overfeeding of fresh greens, in particular lettuce, cabbage and peas, can cause bloating55, but most vegetable types are safe for degus to eat (a list of degu-safe veg can be found in the guide via the button above).
Are degu hard to keep?
Are they easy to handle? Degus can be easily tamed, especially when they're still young. Make sure that you handle them daily to strengthen the bond. If you don't handle them daily, your degus might not stay tame and it will be difficult to handle them.
Can degus have meat?
They are herbivores, or vegetarians, which means that degu food should never contain any meat. In the wild, they primarily eat fibrous vegetation that is naturally found in the Chilean mountains and plains. It's important for degus to consume plenty of fibrous food.
Why is my degu not eating?
Degu is not eating, not interested in food. May be lethargic. Various reasons. If degu is otherwise asymptomatic, cause could be mouth trouble such as infection or bruxism (see mouth section), or bad food.
How much does a degu eat?
Daily feeding
pellet food: give a total of 10 grams of pellet food per degu each day. You can give all of it in the morning or evening or choose to divide it between the morning and evening. Place the pellet food in a ceramic bowl and make sure that each degu has it's own bowl.
Can Degu eat carrots?
Many fruits can be high in sugar and should not be given to degus. Some vegetables for example carrot, sweet potato, beetroot and parsnips can also be high in sugar, so should only be given in very small pieces as an occasional treat. Be wary of commercial treat products as these can also be too sugary.

The flower petals are a favorite of degus, chinchillas, and bunnies, and can even be dried for winter forage. The seeds can only be saved and consumed by degus (they are high in fat for degus, so I use them as training treats) and chinchillas (one or two is ok, not more than that).
How often should you clean a degu cage?
Cleaning the entire cage is usually needed once a month. A lot will depend on the size of the degu cage and the number of degus you keep. For a pair of degus, you can usually only spot clean daily and clean a part of the substrate (1/4) each week. Once a month the entire cage should be thoroughly cleaned.
How do you take care of a common degu?
Like chinchillas, degus need regular dust baths. Provide a shallow bowl of chinchilla dust a couple times a week. They will typically only need it for 20-30 minutes and then you can remove it. Keep the cage away from direct sunlight, drafts, and other pets such as dogs and cats.
