What do toads eat besides bugs?
A toad will eat nearly anything it can fit in its mouth. They become carnivores after metamorphosis, eating live insects and invertebrates like crickets, flies, worms, and spiders. Large toads are capable of eating small mice, lizards, snakes, and other amphibians.
Can you keep a wild toad as a pet?
Although wild toads don't make great long-term pets, they are relatively cheap to care for and can be fun to look after for a while. By knowing how to catch, house, and feed for your toad, you can find a pet that'll love being cared for.
Do toads make good pets?
While toads make excellent pets for responsible children supervised by adults, they do secrete virulent skin toxins and must be treated with care. Always wash thoroughly after handling them, and never touch your mouth or eyes before doing so.

The animals we call toads generally have bumpy skin and spend more time on land. Toads do need a ready source of water—not to swim in, just for a daily soak. Your garden will be most appealing to toads if you put a mini-pool near a toad abode.
Can toads eat dog food?
Diet. Cane toads are omnivores and eat a variety of vegetation, insects, small birds, other toads or frogs, lizards, small mammals, and snakes. If available, cane toads may be attracted to and eat human table scraps and pet food. Never leave pet food outside to avoid attracting cane toads and other animals.
Where do toads live in the garden?
Toad houses, upside down pots, home-made small rock caves, and logs will entice toads to stay in your garden as they like to hide during the day. Homes should be placed in a quiet area with lots of shade.
How do you tell a male from a female toad?
The toads are darker dorsally (on the back) than ventrally (on their bellies). Males have a dark brown to black throat while females have a lighter (predominately white) throat coloration. Over the skin surface are a variety of spots and streaks of brown or beige.
How long can toads go without eating?
Although healthy and previously well-fed frogs can generally survive up to 4 weeks without food outside of hibernation or estivation periods, aquatic frogs can only survive a few hours without water, and toads and arboreal frogs only 24 to 48 hours depending on environmental conditions and species.
Where do toads live during the day?
During the day American toads hide under rocks or logs or dig into dead leaves and soil. In regions with a cold winter, American toads dig deeper to hibernate. When digging they back in, pushing out dirt with their back legs.
Why do toads piggyback?
When strolling by a pond, river or large puddle at night, you may see two frogs clinging onto each other. This is a behavior called amplexus: it allows the male frog to place his cloaca near the female's in order to fertilize her eggs.
