What are the physical features of the seashore?

A beach is a narrow, gently sloping strip of land that lies along the edge of an ocean, lake, or river. Materials such as sand, pebbles, rocks, and seashell fragments cover beaches. Most beach materials are the products of weathering and erosion. Over many years, water and wind wear away at the land.

What are shoreline features?

The shoreline is the line along the edge of the ocean where land meets the water. Many shorelines are irregularly shaped and contain an outcropping of rock, known as a headland, which is a narrow strip of land that projects out into a body of water. These outcroppings are subjected to the constant pounding of waves.

What are the six features that are produced by shoreline erosion?

Harbours, jetties, groynes, breakwaters, sea walls, beach replenishment. Artificial headland, like a low wall or sturdy timber barrier, built out into the sea from a beach to check erosion and drifting. A barrier built out into a body of water to protect a coast or harbour from the force of waves.

How are winter beaches different from summer beaches?

The summer beach is covered with a layer of sand that is moved south by the longshore currents and onshore by low waves. The winter beach is denuded of sand by high storm waves. Cobbles are heavier and remain on the beach. The wave-cut platform underlying the mobile sediments is visible in the foreground.

Are beaches physical features?

A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, etc., or biological sources, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae.

What are the main features of a coastal landscape?

The coast is constantly shaped by the action of the sea (waves and tides), the wind and atmospheric agents. We do not have to forget that some organisms, such as corals and algae, can destroy or build a part of the coastal landscape. Coasts can be low or high, rocky or sandy.

Which of the following are features of sand beaches?

Sandy beach

This is a beach where strong swash waves move sandy material up the beach with a spilling wave. Backwash will be weaker. The coarsest/ biggest pieces of sand will be found at the wave limit – further up the beach. Sandy beaches usually have a gently sloping profile.

What are the characteristics of a sandy beach?

A sandy beach typically has a gentle sloping profile, whereas a shingle beach can be much steeper. The size of the material is larger at the top of the beach, due to the high-energy storm waves carrying large sediment.
