Usage. Entering a garden will release the small animals where they will walk around the garden. By picking them up and giving them to a chao as you would a fruit or hat, they will sparkle and gain/lose stats based on the small animal given. They will also learn an action by doing so.

How do you give an animal a Chao?
Simply destroy an enemy to release the animal within, and then walk into it to pick it up. You can only carry up to ten animals at a time. When you enter the Chao Garden, all the animals currently collected by that character will leave you and run around the garden!
How do you get animals in Chao Garden?
The animals are found hidden throughout the levels, usually in locked cages that you must destroy or in small pipes scattered around the stages (that you have to whistle at). You can also find them in the robots created by Dr. Eggman such as the bomb-throwing monkeys, or the robots that look like E-102 Gamma.

You should feed your Chao regularly! To do this, go up to a tree and grab hold of it by holding the action button, then move the directional keys to shake the tree. Once some fruit falls down, you can pick it up with the action button and give it to your Chao to make it start eating it.

You give your Chao 5 Run animals, then 5 Power animals, then 5 Fly animals, and then 5 Swim animals. You repeat this process 20 times, so that it has had a total of 100 of each kind. Because the Chao most recently interacted with a balance of all types, it will evolve into the Normal type.
How do you get an Angel Chao in Sonic Adventure 2?
To get this kind of Chao, a Chao must be a Hero Chao and must have gone through two reincarnations already. Once the Chao is on its third life they will have to receive at least one of all the small Animals before the Chao has evolved to the second stage of its third life. Two-tone Chao are harder to obtain than Mono-tone Chao because they cannot be bought. Instead, you need to breed for them. An easy way to do this is to buy the matching Mono-tone Chao from the Black Market, and then breed it with one of your starter Chao. If you're lucky, you'll get a Two-tone version of that colour.
