How big do engorged ticks get?
In fact, fully engorged ticks can balloon to up one-quarter to two-thirds inch in diameter. Partially engorged ticks typically measure about one-eighth inch in diameter.
Are big ticks bad?
Most tick bites are harmless and don't need medical treatment. But some ticks (like the deer tick, wood tick, and others) can carry harmful germs that cause diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. The deer tick is tiny, no larger than a pencil point.
How do I know if it's a tick?
Are there small dark spots on your legs, pants or socks? Ticks crawl upwards onto hosts, beginning at the lower leg and wandering until they find a good spot to attach. If you see small spots on your clothing after being outside, they are likely ticks.
How long does a tick need to be attached to transmit disease?
In most cases, the tick must be attached for 36 to 48 hours or more before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted. Most humans are infected through the bites of immature ticks called nymphs. Nymphs are tiny (less than 2 mm) and difficult to see; they feed during the spring and summer months.
What percentage of ticks carry Lyme disease?
Not all ticks carry the Lyme disease bacteria. Depending on the location, anywhere from less than 1% to more than 50% of the ticks are infected with it. While most tick bites are harmless, several species can cause life-threatening diseases.

Only a minority of tick bites leads to Lyme disease. The longer the tick remains attached to your skin, the greater your risk of getting the disease. Lyme infection is unlikely if the tick is attached for less than 36 to 48 hours.
Can you feel a tick crawling on you?
Ticks are sneaky. If you have a tick on you, you may feel it crawling around. In which case, strip off and have a good look or ask a family member to look for you. Unfortunately, most often when you are actually being bitten by a tick, you don't feel anything at all.
What does a tick bite look like after a week?
It shows up within 3-30 days after you were bitten, but it usually takes just over a week. You'll see a round or oval area of redness around the bite. At first, it may look just like a reaction to the bite, but the rash gets bigger over days or even weeks. Typically, it reaches about 6 inches wide.
